Parallel between prehistory and today, humor and dubbing personalities like François Hollande and Julie Gayet: the comic strip Silex and the City de Jul arrives in theaters on Wednesday, September 11, using the ingredients that made him a success on the small screen. “The means of the feature film allow us to be more ambitious, more original” than in the format of the television series made of sketches, explained to AFP the cartoonist Jul, whose comic strip was born in 2009.

In this 1h20 film, directed by Jul and Jean-Paul Guigue, part of the Dotcom family finds itself projected into the present: Blog, the father, and Web, the eldest daughter, are transported from the Stone Age to an Ikea store today. At this moment, the characters are filmed for the first time in live action. “It’s horrible, we have lots of details!”exclaims the teenager.

From this misadventure where Jul appears as a shelf assembler, a nod claimed to the film The Visitors, They accidentally bring back an Allen key used to assemble the legendary Swedish furniture. This unknown object will turn their Paleolithic society, which refuses to evolve towards progress, upside down.

The family and its relatives invent writing, religion, contemporary art, but also experiment with the excesses of today’s world. As in the series, whose five seasons were broadcast on the Arte channel, Jul has called upon many personalities to lend their voices to his characters, in “a team spirit”he explains.

From this desire to “to make the cultural diversity of our society heard” were born the characters dubbed by the writer Amélie Nothomb, in a recurring role as a snobbish cousin, the host Stéphane Bern, as a critic of rock art… or even the couple composed of the filmmaker Julie Gayet and the ex-president François Hollande, who dub the bacteria narrators of the film.

How did Jul convince the former head of state to play the game? Like the other voices in the gallery of characters (Michel Vuillermoz, Guillaume Gallienne, Léa Drucker, Léa Salamé…), “he loved the world of Silex and the City”explains the author, who had “already crossed” Francois Hollande.

The bacteria of the now deputy of Corrèze looks like a caricature of himself, with a round face and small glasses. “His character makes fun of politics”says Jul, as when he quotes the slogan of his presidential campaign “Change is now.” Julie Gayet and François Hollande recorded their voices together. “They were very close and mischievous,” remembers the cartoonist.

Fans of Jul’s insolent tone will also be able to find him in 2025 in new albums by Scrooge McDucka project by Disney and the publisher Glénat, for which he will be the screenwriter. He has also been working for several years on a new part of the Adventures of Rabbi Jacob with Danièle Thompson, who was the screenwriter for her father Gérard Oury’s cult film.
