In 2023, 8% of the population lived below the poverty line, or 5.3 million people, according to the Observatory of Inequalities. The people most affected by precariousness are students and women.

A person is considered poor if they earn less than 940 euros per month, which corresponds to half of the median income of French people. In 2023, 5.3 million people lived below the poverty line, or 8% of the population, according to the Observatory of Inequalities. A figure that has been constantly increasing since the mid-2000s. However, France is one of the European countries that best manages to contain this phenomenon.

Increase in cost of living

The worsening of poverty is due both to the drop in income and aid in 2022, but above all to the increase in the cost of living. Food prices increased by a further 7% in 2023 and energy prices by 23%. If poverty affects all ages, those most affected are young adults between 18 and 29 years old. Nearly 50% of students live on less than 400 euros per month. Women are also among the most affected. They represent 57% of the people welcomed by Secours catholique.
