Food banks are receiving fewer donations from supermarkets while the number of beneficiaries is on the rise. How to explain this situation ? Report in the Bas-Rhin.
The association for aid and accommodation for young people in the Neudorf district in Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin) distributes 50 baskets of food products each week. If the basket is full, some products are missing. Thus, meat, butter or milk are not available. It’s been like that for a year for the association. “We have more and more people and less and less to give. It is complicated. We have to tighten”declares Damien Rotureau, volunteer of the association.
30% more beneficiaries in one year
The supply of the Bas-Rhin food bank is 50% dependent on supermarkets. The anti-waste law imposed on them since 2020 has had a perverse effect: there are more promotions on products soon to expire, and therefore fewer donations to associations. Added to this is the increase of more than 30% in the number of beneficiaries in one year. The food bank has ordered pasta, rice and milk for the summer distributions.
