Possible salmonella contamination | Recall of Kinder chocolates in Canada

(Ottawa) Ferrero Canada is recalling some of its Kinder brand chocolates across the country due to possible salmonella contamination.

Posted at 9:35 p.m.

A dozen products are affected by this recall announced Wednesday evening by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).

These include the Easter chocolates ‘The Egg Hunt Kit’, ‘Mini Eggs’ and the popular ‘Kinder Surprise’.

The CFIA recommends that you do not consume these products and rather throw them away or bring them back to the stores where they were purchased. It is advisable to contact your doctor if you believe you have been ill after eating one of the recalled products.

“Foods contaminated with Salmonella bacteria do not necessarily have visible spoilage or a suspicious odor, but can still make you sick,” the agency said in a statement.

She goes on to warn that young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems can get serious and sometimes fatal infections.

“In healthy people, salmonellosis can present with short-lived symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Salmonellosis can lead to long-term complications, including a severe form of arthritis,” the CFIA says.

They are currently investigating food safety which may lead to the recall of other products.
