Possible garbage collection every two weeks: “it’s going to be disastrous”

The City of Montreal plans to space out garbage collection every other week, in all boroughs.

Waste collection has always been a major challenge for large cities.

Throughout the year, but especially in the summer or spring, litter accumulates along the roads and this creates foul odors.

Municipal authorities are considering the initiative because of the success of a pilot project in the borough of Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve. This could be extended, in addition to being extended to other sectors of the city.

Many citizens of the metropolis are apprehensive of the City’s initiative, since it is feared that the unsanitary conditions of the streets will increase.

“It’s still complicated. It’s likely to accumulate, it’s not going to be great. Especially right now, you can’t walk too much on the sidewalks. It could be quite complicated, ”said a citizen.

Another citizen interviewed by TVA Nouvelles puts the situation into perspective by saying that Montreal is cleaner than many other cities in the world. However, she remains pessimistic.

“In general, it’s pretty clean. It depends on the neighborhoods though. There are some neighborhoods where you walk squarely on the garbage cans.

Another lady is worried. She is already anticipating the consequences.

“Oh no! It’s going to have too much damage everywhere. People don’t pay attention. They throw garbage anyhow. It’s going to be disastrous.”

According to the administration of Valérie Plante, the measure will make people aware of their weekly waste consumption. In addition, we anticipate that the population will take small steps to better sort their waste, and thus reduce the quantity of residual materials in the dumps of Greater Montreal.
