Will there be enough electricity this winter in France? The government has asked EDF to take measures to improve supply after the shutdown of several nuclear reactors due to their maintenance. What are the solutions in a context where prices have soared on the energy market?
In our kitchens, laundry rooms or dining rooms, will we have to suffer power cuts this winter in our homes or even in our businesses? With the drop in temperatures, electricity consumption is increasing everywhere in France. To meet its needs, France can generally count on its 19 nuclear power plants. Problem: the reactors are aging. Result: France lost a third of its production.
For Yves Marignac, nuclear and energy expert, work is essential: “Today we are in this constraint, in this very negative perspective where we continue to depend more and more on a nuclear fleet which is less and less reliable.” Despite these difficulties, EDF wishes to reassure its customers. On the European electricity market, the situation is tense. Buying from other countries could even be complicated if there is a significant cold snap. This is what could lead to cuts this winter, mainly in businesses. A possible consequence for individuals: a slowdown on the network but also a new surge in prices.
