The Supreme Court puts an end to positive discrimination. This system has allowed students from ethnic minorities to integrate American universities.
In the United States, the Supreme Court has just declared positive discrimination at the entrance to universities illegal. Activists of Asian origin, who had taken legal action, are savoring their victory. “From now on, all young people will be evaluated for their background, their personalities, their results, but no longer by the color of their skin”, says Yukong Zhao, chair of the Asian American Coalition for Education. Since the 1960s, positive discrimination based on ethnicity has enabled Black Americans and Latinos, with equal skills, to integrate campuses from which they were excluded.
Joe Biden condemns this decision
In a University of Washington (United States), the questioning of positive discrimination goes badly. “Here in Georgetown, it is predominantly white. I think if this decision had been made before, I would never have been able to enter this university”, assures a black student. “If we reduce positive discrimination, we reduce diversity”, adds a student. Joe Biden, President of the United States, has condemned a historic setback. For his part, Donald Trump welcomes this decision.
