While the initial phase of gathering information aimed at establishing the facts is practically complete, the commission has already heard numerous witnesses and received more than 50,000 documents, including investigation files, emails, notes from first responders , transcripts of police communications and photographs.

The 162-page preliminary report does not contain any findings or recommendations since these elements should be found in the final report expected on 1er november.

For the moment, the federal-provincial commission of inquiry wishes to explore “the how and the why” behind the killing perpetrated by a lone gunman who claimed 22 victims while escaping the police for 13 hours between April 18 and 19, 2020.

Over the coming weeks, the public inquiry plans to look into important events that took place before and after the carnage.

In addition, the commission should present a summary of the violent acts committed by the killer against other people, including his spouse and other members of his family.

More information should also be revealed on the financial situation of the killer and the investigation wishes to know more about the way in which the families of the victims were informed of their death as well as the support they received.
