Portals review | Montreal-style electro from Black Tiger Sex Machine

Through varied and impactful collaborations, Black Tiger Sex Machine shows that they are one of the most skilled groups in their category.

The Montreal trio presents the album Portalsa universe where aggressive electro music dominates and where the bass literally vibrates the eardrums, in a percussive amalgamation of styles.

Rap, pop or rock have in common that they go extremely well with the productions of Black Tiger Sex Machine (BTSM). Electro bass and dubstep here depict the group’s postapocalyptic sounds by blending with the styles of various collaborators.

On this new opus, RUNN, Wasiu, YMIR, Hyro The Hero and Youngr lend their voices to the frenetic rhythms that producers Kai Wachi, Dion Timmer, EDDIE, Hairitage and WODD helped build.

A piece like Eclipse, on which the artist RUNN sings, shows that even a ballad can adopt the codes of electro heavy music that BTSM masters. In their hands, genres meet to create unique pieces, always stamped with their distinct signature. Montreal rapper Wasiu brings a completely different touch, also incisive, particularly on the song Die A God. From one room to another, we navigate the different sonic paintings that the group and its collaborators draw.

Montrealers have an international presence rarely matched by local artists. At the Lost Lands Festival in Ohio, they performed to over 60,000 people. Then, the Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado welcomed them for a sold-out performance, with more than 9,000 fans in attendance.

These figures are important because they demonstrate that the BTSM experience is amplified by concerts. When listening to their new album, one observation emerges: it is livehelped by all the visual aspect that the group infuses into its performances, that these productions will take on their full meaning.
