A man died at the Port of Montreal after an accident at one of its docks.
A spokesperson for the Port of Montreal, Renée Larouche, indicated that the administration was informed of an accident involving a truck driver at the Viau maritime terminal, northeast of the city center, Friday afternoon, around 2 p.m.
The Montreal City Police Service (SPVM) and emergency services were called to the scene. The Commission for Standards, Equity, Health and Safety at Work (CNESST) also opened an investigation.
Mme Larouche offered the port authority’s condolences to the trucker’s family.
This fatal work accident at the Port of Montreal occurs as Sunday, April 28 will be Memorial Day for People Dead or Injured at Work.
“In 2023, 210 workers lost their lives at work, including 68 in the construction sector and more than 114,000 people who suffered an occupational injury,” according to the Quebec Federation of Workers (FTQ), the most large workers union in the province.
FTQ union members will gather Sunday morning in front of the National Assembly, in Quebec, and in front of Montreal city hall, in memory of the missing and to recall the importance of prevention at work.
