The 1,200 longshore workers at the Port of Montreal have just rejected 99.5% of the latest employer offer for the renewal of their collective agreement.
The Maritime Employers’ Association, which represents the employers’ side, affirmed that this proposed regulation represented the furthest it could go in the current context.
Of the 1,206 members of this local section of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, affiliated with the FTQ, 1,078 were present and 99.54% of them rejected the employer’s offer.
A secret vote was held on Sunday and Monday, after a union meeting held on Sunday, CUPE said.
However, talks are expected to continue on Monday and Tuesday. The parties have already entered a mediation phase to attempt a rapprochement.
Salaries and job security are among the main points of dispute.
