After rejecting the most recent employer offer, the dock workers at the Port of Montreal are preparing to strike starting next Monday, which will paralyze two of the main container terminals for three days.
Their union issued its strike notice on Friday, emphasizing that the collective agreement of its approximately 1,150 members expired on December 31.
This walkout should, however, spare the Société Terminalaux Montréal Gateway – which operates two international terminals at the port. The Union of Longshoremen of the Port of Montreal, affiliated with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), plans to take stock in the morning of Friday.
On Wednesday, the longshoremen had rejected the most recent employer offer by 99.63% by voting, at a rate of 97.88%, for pressure tactics which could go as far as a strike.
Meanwhile, further south, a significant threat of strike looms for the 1er October in several ports on the American east coast, on behalf of the International Longshoremen’s Association.
More details to come.
