Pork sector: Quebec pig breeders angry with Olymel

Olymel’s decision to reduce its purchases of Quebec pork as part of the restructuring of the company has made Quebec pig breeders jump up and denounce “nonsense”.

Olymel’s desire to reduce its purchases of pigs by 25,000 head from March 2022 and the closure of the Princeeville slaughterhouse will have a major impact on the Quebec pork industry, while 15,000 pigs will go by the wayside each week.

Les Éleveurs de porcs du Québec refuse to bear the brunt of the restructuring of Olymel, which benefits from $ 150 million each year.

The organization says it is mobilized with the means at its disposal to prioritize Quebec pork.

“The whole business model of the pork sector can be shaken. Once again, it is the pork companies, which are our pride and who shine through their world-renowned know-how, which will suffer the impacts, ”said the president of Éleveurs de porcs du Québec, David Duval.

“Olymel must reiterate its values as a Quebec flagship,” added Mr. Duval.

The restructuring underway at Olymel seems to have come at a bad time for Quebec breeders, who were not spared by the labor dispute at the Olymel plant in Vallée-Jonction.
