Initially, Pope Francis is invited to the G7, which takes place Thursday June 13 and Friday June 14 in southern Italy, to speak on artificial intelligence (AI), a first for a pope. But he should take advantage of this trip to address the diplomatic situation, particularly the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine, during his bilateral meetings. The 87-year-old Argentine Jesuit will meet on Friday with around ten leaders, including the French, American and Ukrainian presidents, the Vatican announced Thursday.
Jorge Bergoglio will be welcomed by the President of the Italian Council Giorgia Meloni, according to an official program distributed by the Secretariat of State of the Holy See. In the process, he will hold bilateral talks with Volodymyr Zelensky, Emmanuel Macron, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva.
Then, late in the afternoon, the pope will meet privately with other leaders. Like Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, American President Joe Biden, his Brazilian counterparts Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Turkish Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Algerian Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
