An increasingly rare image, the sovereign pontiff went to Venice (Italy) on Sunday April 28. Pope Francis had not left Rome since his visit to Marseille in September 2023.
Seven months since he had left Rome. The Pope arrived on the morning of Sunday April 28 in Venice, Italy, for a quick trip. He began by visiting a women’s prison where he called for better reintegration conditions for inmates. “It is fundamental that even the prison system offers prisoners and women prisoners tools and spaces for human, spiritual, cultural and professional growth”demanded Pope Francis.
A tour of Asia and Oceania
After this visit, he chaired a high mass in the presence of many religious and political leaders to deliver a call for peace. “I think of the martyred Ukraine, of Palestine, of Israel, of the Rohingya people and of all the people who suffer from war and violence”did he declare.
Since his visit to Marseille last September, Pope Francis, 87, had not traveled. His increasingly fragile general health forces him to avoid traveling. At Easter time in particular, the sovereign pontiff appeared very tired. This visit to Venice therefore reassures the faithful, while the Vatican announced that the Pope would begin a tour of Asia and Oceania.
