On the sidewalks or at the beach, it is impossible to miss them. In Polynesia, the number of dogs without collars is only increasing. According to animal protection associations, this dog overpopulation would reach 500,000 individuals on Thursday, November 30, twice as many as the number of inhabitants. On the island of Tahiti, Marama Bres comes every day to meet these stray dogs. In his trunk, there are bowls of food. With her association, she feeds nearly a hundred dogs per week.

Two pounds

On the island, on average, a sterilization costs almost 200 euros. For years, dogs have reproduced, grouped together in packs and sometimes ruled the roost. “I was attacked by dogs. I tried to push them back home. (…) They bit me on the legs”testifies a man, who does not feel “safer”. On average, the hospital receives one victim per day of stray dog attacks. To try to control this flow of dogs, two pounds were created. To avoid euthanasia, the pound teams go looking for possible owners.
