Since last weekend, the inhabitants of Lyon can no longer heat themselves with open fireplaces, deemed too polluting. They would be responsible for more than half of fine particle emissions in the agglomeration.

Since Saturday April 1, using open fireplaces or stoves over 20 years old is prohibited in the Lyon region. I did in the evening, when it was a little cool, a little humid”explains Jacques Lienard, owner of a fireplace in Chassieu (Rhone). It is now considered too polluting. To continue to benefit from it, he will have to adapt it and install an insert. Cost of the operation: between 5,000 and 6,000 euros.

More than 160 municipalities affected by the prefectural ban

Around Lyons (Rhone)more than 160 municipalities are affected by the prefectural ban. The sector only counts 10% wood-fired heaters, but they emit 65% fine particles over one year. They are often the source of pollution peaks in winter. In addition to national aid, the Métropole de Lyon also offers a bonus of 1,000 to 3,000 euros. “If we want to tackle pollutants on fine particles, it is obviously individual wood heating”comments Peter Athanazvice-president (EELV) of the metropolis of Lyon.
