Pollution is responsible for nine million premature deaths worldwide, according to the Lancet magazine. “It is true that 90% of this mortality is concentrated in low- or middle-income countries”, says Damien Mascret, doctor and journalist at France Télévisions, present on the set of 19/20, Wednesday May 18. According to Santé Publique France, between 2016 and 2019, excess mortality linked to pollution killed 47,000 people per year.

During pollution peaks, the short-term effects are asthma and chronic bronchitis. “More generally, for people who are frail, especially the elderly, there is an increased risk of heart attack, stroke”, continues Damien Mascret. In the long term, air pollution can lead to lung cancer. “We forget that every day, unfortunately, in cities in particular, there is pollution that damages our health”concludes the doctor.
