Poll: Legault is the least popular prime minister in Canada

Nothing is going well for François Legault. After a spectacular drop in voting intentions, he is now the least popular prime minister in Canada, according to an Angus Reid poll published Monday.

In the space of a year, the satisfaction rate with regard to one’s work has seen a drastic drop of 26 points, to stand at 31%. Conversely, 61% of Quebecers surveyed disapprove of his performance.

This is a considerable debacle for the Premier of Quebec, who was at the top of Angus Reid’s list at the start of his second mandate last year. At that time, 57% of Quebecers said they were satisfied with his work.

By spring, however, the needles began to move. Support for François Legault rose to 48% in June, then to 47% in September. He has therefore lost most of his feathers in the last three months, while the discontent has grown with the strike movement of state employees and the controversial subsidy for preparatory games of the Los Angeles Kings in Quebec.

Angus Reid’s traditional survey was conducted online among 3,749 Canadians, including 602 Quebecers, from November 24 to 1er December. In Quebec, the margin of error is plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Elsewhere in the country, it is the new premier of Manitoba, Wab Kinew, who is at the top of the list. Mr. Kinew is the first Indigenous person from a First Nation to lead a province.

At the other end of the ranking, Ontario Premier Doug Ford and New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs are doing a little better than their Quebec counterpart, with 34% and 33% approval respectively. Like François Legault, the two men were elected at the head of their province in 2018.
