Polish Open | Swiatek wins her first match and remains undefeated on clay

(Warsaw) World’s top player Iga Swiatek easily defeated Magdalena Frech 6-1, 6-2 at the Polish Open on Wednesday in her first tournament since her third-round elimination from the Wimbledon Open which ended her streak of 37 victories.

Swiatek’s triumph in his homeland extended his clay court streak to 17. His overall record since the start of the season is 47-4.

In the next round, the 21-year-old Pole will face Romania’s Gabriela Lee, who eliminated Raluka Serban 3-6, 6-2, 7-5.

Meanwhile, defending champion Maryna Zanevska suffered a surprise elimination at the hands of Ukraine’s Kateryna Baindl, who won 6-3, 6-3 in a first-round duel.

In other first-round matches, Kristina Mladenovic of France came from behind to defeat Anna Bondar 1-6, 7-5, 7-6(8) while eighth-seeded Petra Martic had the best over Weronika Falkowska 7-5, 6-4.

Italians Sara Errani and Elisabetta Cocciaretto also reached the next round, as did Ana Bogdan and Laura Pigossi.
