Polish farmers began blocking an important border crossing with Germany, in Slubice, on Sunday February 25. They want to protest against European regulations and imports of products from outside the EU, which they consider do not comply with European standards. “The blockage started at 1 p.m., both lanes of the A2 motorway are cut”declared the spokesperson for the local police.
The farmers had initially planned 25 days of blockage. After discussions with local people, businessmen and transporters, they finally decided to “probably unblock the passage” Monday, said Dariusz Wrobel, one of the organizers of the movement. “It depends on things that we cannot predict”he said, on the eve of a council of agriculture ministers from EU countries on Monday in Brussels.
“We are protesting against the European Green Deal, we must finally control imports of agri-food products from non-EU countries, and we must take care of agricultural production in the EU”, estimated Dariusz Wrobel. According to him, Polish producers “identify” with the entire farmers’ protest movement across Europe. Farmer protests have been taking place for several weeks in Poland, with farmers blocking roads across the country and border crossings with Ukraine.
