In the Middle East, the anti-polio campaign has begun in the central Gaza Strip. Meanwhile, in the West Bank, fighting continues on the fourth day of the operation described by Israel as anti-terrorist.
90% of Gazan children need to be vaccinated to stop the polio epidemic. A first case has been confirmed in a 10-month-old child in the Gaza Strip, where the disease was eradicated 25 years ago. After lengthy negotiations, the WHO has secured a series of three-day humanitarian pauses to allow vaccination of 640,000 children to begin. But due to damaged roads and displacement, the UN has said it may need additional days.
This vaccination campaign is taking place as fighting continues to rage in Gaza. In the West Bank, the so-called Israeli counter-terrorism operation has been launched. In Jenin, only Israeli tanks remain, residents have been forced to evacuate. We left our homes behind, I have 10 children, I wanted to keep them safe”says a civilian.
In four days, around twenty members of Hamas and Islamic Jihad were killed in the West Bank.
