The police said that M.me Yang had been stabbed to death Tuesday in an altercation while accompanying a City of Burnaby staff member to a homeless encampment.
The British Columbia Prosecution Service said in a statement that Jongwon Ham was charged in the policewoman’s death, and appeared in court for the first time on Wednesday.
The House of Commons today held a minute’s silence in honor of Ms.me Yang and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau paid tribute to the deceased police officer.
Mme Yang was a mental health worker who worked with people experiencing homelessness. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told the House of Commons that mental health resources need to be bolstered so the police department isn’t the only responder in these kinds of situations.
The Prosecution Service said Mr Ham has been remanded in custody and will return to court on November 2.
