The intervention of the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) at the home of the Celik family, five years ago, “played a decisive role in the death of Mr. [Koray Kevin] Celik,” according to the coroner.
The 28-year-old died in front of his parents on March 6, 2017, when police tried to subdue him at the family home in L’Île-Bizard, west of Montreal.
The SPVM officers in question did not act “in application of the elementary principles of good police intervention”, according to the coroner’s report, “and the situation degenerated”.
The police operation is not the only cause of the death of the young man, specifies Me Malouin, but it “caused the cascade of events which ultimately led to the death of Mr. Celik”.
According to the autopsy, Korey Kevin Celik “died of intoxication / adverse reaction to a mixture of alcohol, medication and drugs”. He also had “cardiac enlargement,” which “may have contributed to the death,” the document reads.
The victim’s family had refused to participate in the coroner’s public inquest, denouncing a system that is not independent and which, according to them, serves to protect the police.
