Police recovered 598 stolen vehicles at the Port of Montreal, mostly in Ontario

The Ontario Provincial Police and the Canada Border Services Agency say they have recovered 598 stolen vehicles intended for export at the Port of Montreal, with an estimated value of $34.5 million.

Police say 75% of vehicles seized from shipping containers in Montreal had been stolen in Ontario.

Ontario Provincial Police Deputy Commissioner Marty Kearns said Wednesday that no arrests have been made in the case, but the investigation is continuing.

Police say 390 containers were searched at the port of Montreal during a joint operation involving border services, police forces from Quebec and Ontario and insurance investigators.

Mr. Kearns says the financial impact of these seizures on organized crime is significant and that some of the vehicles recovered were stolen during carjackings or violent home invasions.

The deputy commissioner said thieves particularly target high-end vans and SUVs for export to markets in Asia, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and South America.
