The SPVM police officer who had been disarmed and beaten with an iron bar in the winter of 2021 was once again the target of an armed attack, late Thursday afternoon, in the borough of LaSalle, in Montreal.
According to our information, the police officer targeted by this attack is Sanjay Vig, the agent who found himself at the heart of the scandal of the arrest of Mamadi Camara, in January 2021 in the Parc-Extension district.
This time, police officer Vig was conducting a radar operation around 3:30 p.m. near the intersection of St. Patrick Street and Stirling Avenue.
At the time, the officer was outside his patrol car, but very close to it.
“At some point, the police officer heard two detonations,” reported agent Mariane Allaire-Morin, spokesperson for the SPVM.
The two projectiles shattered the rear window of the police car. At this stage of the investigation, the police do not know exactly what weapon was used by the perpetrator of this attack.
According to our information, it could be a pellet gun or a small caliber firearm. The origin of the shots remained a mystery at the end of the afternoon and no suspects were arrested in this case.
Fortunately, Sanjay Vig was not injured, but was shaken by this event, which is reminiscent of his intervention on January 28, 2021.
That evening, he was taking part in a road safety operation along Crémazie Boulevard, when he intercepted Mamadi Camara for using his cell phone while driving.
When he had just handed him a ticket and was returning to his police vehicle, Sanjay Vig had been attacked from behind with a metal bar. He had been disarmed by the suspect. The latter had even opened fire in the direction of the policeman. The projectile had grazed his skull.
Sanjay Vig had been hospitalized for a few days following this sneaky and extremely violent attack.
The experienced policeman had named Mamadi Camara as the perpetrator of this attack. The investigation, however, cleared Mr. Camara, who still spent six long days in prison following his arrest.
Mamadi Camara subsequently filed a $1.2 million lawsuit against the City of Montreal. Last February, following an agreement between the two parties, the City agreed to pay the sum of $347,000 to Mr. Camara.
