Montreal police have opened an investigation after a fire that sent a 66-year-old man to hospital overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday in the borough of Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie.

Firefighters requested assistance from the Montreal City Police Service (SPVM) for a fire that occurred around 3:30 a.m. in an apartment on Christophe-Colomb Avenue, near Bélanger Street.

The victim, who was found inconvenienced by smoke in his home, was taken care of by paramedics who then transported him to a hospital in critical condition, according to Montreal police.

“We are awaiting feedback regarding his state of health,” said SPVM spokesperson Jeanne Drouin, further specifying that the investigation has been transferred to the arson module of the Montreal police.

Around ten tenants were evacuated as a preventive measure, but they ended up returning to their apartment Wednesday morning, according to the SPVM, adding that investigators should go to the site to analyze the scene and try to understand what happened.
