(Vancouver) Police cleared pro-Palestinian protesters from a main intersection on the University of British Columbia campus in Vancouver on Wednesday.
The intersection of University Boulevard and Wesbrook Mall was clear at 12:15 p.m. local time, with several unoccupied Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) vehicles parked nearby.
A video posted shortly after 11 a.m. by an account associated with the protests showed dozens of uniformed police officers walking down a main campus road.
The Instagram account called “People’s University for Gaza at UBC” earlier posted an update asking people to gather at 11 a.m. for a protest at that intersection.
The person who answered the RCMP non-emergency line around noon referred media inquiries to the university.
A spokeswoman for the Vancouver Police Department said they were asked to go on “standby” but the department did not deploy any officers.
Pro-Palestinian protesters have occupied a sports field on the campus of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver since April 29. It is the first of three similar camps created in the province.
Protesters are calling on universities to cut ties with Israeli companies and institutions. They consider them to be complicit in the “genocide” of the Palestinians.
A UBC spokeswoman said earlier this week that the institution had no update on President Benoit-Antoine Bacon’s May 16 statement, which called for “a productive dialogue with members of the encampment to work toward a peaceful resolution.”
