Polaris Prize | Two artists from Quebec on the short list

Observation with regard to the short list of the Polaris Music Prize, unveiled Thursday: pop music, R&B and electro are the happy musical styles that marked the year 2023 in Canadian productions.


Two musicians from Quebec are among the 10 finalists, Montreal DJ Gayance, with her album Masqueradeand electronic artist Debbie Friday, thanks to Good Luck. Born in Nigeria, Debbie Friday grew up in Montreal, while Gayance, whose real name is Aïsha Vertus, is from Haiti and grew up in Montreal North.

The 2023 short list does not include any French-language albums. Pop singer-songwriter Leslie Feist and R&B singer Daniel Caesar are among ten nominees for the $50,000 prize for best Canadian album on September 19.
