Polar cold this weekend and winter storm to start the week

Freezing temperatures reaching -34 degrees on Friday will continue through the weekend and a winter storm will welcome students back to class on Monday.

Saturday, the mercury remains extremely low with temperatures reaching – 34 degrees in the morning and – 27 degrees in the afternoon in Montreal.

In Estrie, temperatures could drop to -38 or even -44 degrees according to Environment Canada, which maintains the extreme cold alert in the region and calls for caution.

The winter storm will hit Quebec in the middle of the day on Monday, when students should normally return to class. It is also the first major storm since February 16, 2021, about 11 months ago according to MeteoMedia. Quite violent gusts could even exceed 80 km / h, especially for the south and center of the province. Temperatures, like the weekend, remain low, around -15 degrees.

The depression could bring significant amounts of snow. In areas near the St. Lawrence River, strong winds combined with snow could generate blowing snow and thus considerably reduce visibility.
