Poland announced on Monday May 27 the purchase of cruise missiles from the United States, worth 677 million euros, in order to increase its defense capabilities in the face of a potential threat from Russia. “The war in Ukraine demonstrated the importance of being able to fire missiles at targets even very far from the front line, and the range of the missiles that will be purchased is approximately 1,000 km”said the Polish Ministry of Defense, Wladislaw Kociniak, in a press release.
Deliveries of the AGM-158 JASSM-ER (Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile) missiles will be made between 2026 and 2030, according to a ministry schedule. Poland already has JASSM missiles with a range of 370 kilometers which are used by its American-made F-16 multi-role fighter jets. The contract, which is to be officially signed on Tuesday, is part of a rapid modernization of the Polish army, accelerated by Russian aggression against Ukraine.
