Can we compare the Ukrainian conflict with the war in Syria? Enora Chame, author of the book When the Shadow Advances, a high-risk mission in Syria, came to speak on the subject at 11 p.m. on franceinfo.
For Énora Chame, a former intelligence officer for the French army, “with regard to the role of the international community on the suffering of populations, I find a significant and disturbing mirror effect”. She also points out similarities about the fate of the soldiers. “One cannot help thinking, like the Syrian soldiers, that the Russian soldiers are also the hostages of their country. It must be abominable for the conscripts not to even know why they are there. I really find moments of Syria”she adds.
The author of the book “When the shadow advances, a high-risk mission in Syria”, however, notes two differences: “In Syria, the government attacked and liquidated its own population. This is not the case in Ukraine”. Another distinction: the nature of the war. “In Syria, it had become a civil war, of all against all, after a while. In contrast, in Ukraine, the galvanized population came together as one to fight the Russians”says Enora Chame.
