Pointe-aux-Trembles | A public inquiry into the feminicide of Dahia Khellaf

The murder of Dahia Khellaf, found dead with her two children in December 2019 in Pointe-aux-Trembles, a few days after the disappearance of her husband from whom she was separated, will be the subject of a public inquiry, announced the Office of the coroner on Wednesday.

“A public inquiry has been ordered in this case,” said the Coroner’s Office by email, stressing that “certain elements, in particular factual, could be analyzed and exposed differently” following the public hearings.

The mother and her 2 and 4 year old sons were found dead at their home in Pointe-aux-Trembles several days after the father’s body was found dead in Lanaudière. This macabre discovery, which looked like a triple murder and a feminicide, had aroused strong reactions.

“This is a feminicide in a context of domestic violence,” concluded coroner Alain Manseau in his detailed report of twenty pages on the death of M.me Khellaf.

The man had been ordered by the court not to approach his ex-wife, who had several times filed a complaint against him. He had never accepted their breakup, had indicated testimonies collected by The Press shortly after the tragedy.

Coroner Manseau’s reports contain numerous recommendations aimed at several parties.

The Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions (DPCP) issued a statement in response to the reports on Wednesday afternoon, saying they contained “factual and legal errors” and “misunderstanding” of certain guidelines and practices, as well as of the legal framework to which the DPCP is subject.

Further details will follow.
