“I am from Pointe-aux-Trembles, which is a neighborhood of Montreal located east of everything that exists,” wrote Serge Bouchard. The late writer had no idea then that the neighborhood library of his childhood could one day bear his name!

The Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles borough announced this week that steps have been taken to have the Pointe-aux-Trembles library named in honor of the illustrious anthropologist, writer and animator , who died in May 2021. The council adopted a motion to this effect during its March 8 meeting. The proposal will be forwarded to the toponymy committee and council of the City of Montreal, which will render its opinion on this choice and may later forward the request to the Commission de toponymie du Québec, responsible for formalizing the name change.
“A great intellectual, Serge Bouchard has always shared his point-making pride and his love of the river in his writings. That its name is associated with a place of knowledge and culture like a library goes without saying,” declared Caroline Bourgeois, Mayor of Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles. According to the office of the mayor, the family has already agreed to the proposal, and the Atelier d’histoire de la Pointe-aux-Trembles also supports the process.
Through its motion, the borough council also wishes to “promote the repertoire of the anthropologist’s works, his contribution to the advancement of Quebec knowledge in several fields, including the history of the First Nations, as well as his rich of knowledge shared through his written and spoken art”.
Serge Bouchard also said that Pointe-aux-Trembles is “a place where no one stops or lingers”. History now risks playing a trick on him.
