Plateau-Mont-Royal | New fire at Barracks 26

A fire station which was preparing to reopen its doors, twenty-five years after being ravaged by a fire, has just suffered a new fire.

Barracks 26, located at the corner of Mont-Royal Est and des Érables, was the subject of an intervention by the Fire Safety Service on Thursday around 5 p.m.

“A generator test carried out today generated overheating and a fire around a pipe in the roof,” the Plateau-Mont-Royal borough indicated on social networks the same day. ” Fortunately, no one got hurt. An inspection will take place tomorrow to assess water and smoke damage. »

Fate befalls Fire Station 26, a heritage building dating from 1901. It suffered a major fire in 1999, when the firefighters working there left a pan on the stove while leaving to fight another fire.

The building was then abandoned without adequate protection, allowing water to seep into the masonry. Its state of deterioration forced the City of Montreal to completely dismantle it, before rebuilding it identically. However, the project turned out to be much more complex than expected, leading to repeated delays. In particular, the work was completely paralyzed in 2019.

Barracks 26 was to be reopened in the spring. The City of Montreal could not immediately say whether its reopening would be delayed.
