Plateau-Mont-Royal | Man between life and death after armed attack

A 35-year-old man is currently between life and death after an armed attack that took place in an alley.

Emergency services received a 911 call on Thursday around 7:45 p.m. for an armed assault that allegedly took place in an alley at the intersection of Saint-Denis Street and Mont-Royal Avenue.

According to initial information gathered by The Pressit could be a dispute that escalated between two homeless people. So far, there is no indication that this event is linked to organized crime.

Upon arriving at the scene, police found a 35-year-old man injured in the upper body by a blunt object. The man was taken to a hospital and was conscious when he was transported. At the time of writing, according to information from the Montreal Police Department (SPVM), the victim is still in “critical condition” and doctors fear for his life.

“It appears that an altercation between the victim and another man in the alley escalated,” said Jean-Pierre Brabant, SPVM media relations officer.

The suspect reportedly left the scene on foot in a direction that is currently unknown. A perimeter has been set up; Rue Saint-Denis is closed southbound at Rue Villeneuve.

Around 10:30 p.m., several investigators were on the scene. Witnesses will be interviewed in the coming hours and surveillance videos will be viewed to try to understand the circumstances surrounding the event.
