Plateau Mont-Royal | Cyclists mobilize to raise motorists’ awareness of safety

A demonstration by cyclists aimed at making motorists aware of the importance of riding carefully is underway in the Plateau Mont-Royal and slowed traffic in places at the end of the morning

The rendezvous was given by the organization Vélophantom Québec at the intersection of avenues du Parc and avenue de Mont-Royal at 11 a.m. The mobilization, which takes the form of a “human cycle path”, brought together around fifty people.

Vélophantom Quebec is at the origin of the movement of white bicycles installed where cyclists perished after being hit by vehicles.

The organization installed its first white bike on Avenue du Parc in 2013 following the death of Suzanne Châtelain. Since then, several deaths are to be deplored and many white bikes are seen in Montreal.

Present at the event with his children, Frédéric Bataille pleaded for parents to be able to leave their little ones alone on their bikes in Montreal without their lives being put in danger.

Mr. Bataille notes that the City is aware of this issue, that “it’s going in the right direction, but too slowly,” he says.

With climate change, it seems obvious to him that everything must be done to limit polluting transport and that it is essential to encourage people to travel by bicycle.

In his opinion, a big city like Montreal can be perfectly safe for cyclists provided it is developed with this priority in mind.
