During the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic held in Paris from May 29 to June 2, the international community gave itself until the end of 2024 to reach a binding treaty to curb this pollution which threatens ecosystems. This is the subject of Talk franceinfo. Every evening from 6 p.m., Manon Mella and her guests debate with Internet users on the franceinfo Twitch channel.

France consumes 4.5 million tonnes of plastic each year, i.e. sixty-eight kilos per person per year. In terms of recycling, France is second to last at European level. While 98% of our plastic is collected, only 22% is recycled. Non-recycled plastics are thus buried underground, incinerated or even processed abroad. France exports several hundred thousand tons of plastic every year. Air pollution, sea pollution, destruction of ecosystems: how to fight against the evil of the century.

Ludovic Pauchant receives Dorothee Moisanjournalist and author of the book Plasticizers to Kero editions in the Franceinfo Talk to discuss it.

The cost of recycling

Each year in the world 300 million tons of plastic waste are generated, nearly half of which is neither collected nor recycled. For example, there are nearly 247 billion pieces of plastic waste in the Mediterranean Sea.

This phenomenon is explained in particular because the industrial production of plastic packaging requires the use of chemicals and mixtures of different types of plastics. Recycling this type of transformed material is thus more expensive, which makes it more rare. So what to do with the plastic we produce? How to fight against this industrial pollution?

Join us from 6 p.m. Monday to Friday on the franceinfo Twitch channel to participate in Manon Mella’s Talk. An hour of exchange, clarification, debate around topical and social issues.
