Many French people hesitate before the yellow and green plastic recycling bins, especially since the rules can vary from one city to another. The issue is essential, because France must catch up in this area.

Plastic, we consume it every day, but when sorting it, there are always the same hesitations: yellow trash can or green trash can? With all the different packaging, there is enough to tangle the brushes. These errors are partly at the origin of the fine of 1.2 billion euros paid by France to the European Union in 2021. A fine resulting from the fact that France only recycles 28% of its plastic, half of what the Germans recycle.

Why so much delay in plastic recycling? Among the elements of the answer, there is sorting at home, the rules of which are not always easy to respect. In addition, the rules are not the same depending on the city. In 2023, this will change: the same instructions will be applied throughout France. Finally, not all plastics recycle equally well. Only 65% of them are recyclable. Recycling processes are being developed to 15% of them, and there is no solution for the 20% remaining.
