(Ottawa) The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued a recall on Monday for brands of plant-based beverages made with almond, cashew, coconut and oat due to listeria concerns.
The agency’s recall applies to Silk brand almond, coconut milk, almond-coconut and oat beverages, as well as Great Value brand almond beverage.
The products in question were manufactured in Ontario and distributed by Danone Canada, which says it has preemptively suspended all production and shipping from this third-party facility in order to conduct a thorough investigation.
“We are deeply concerned by this situation and we take it very seriously,” said Frédéric Guichard, president of Danone Canada, in a statement.
“Currently, through this rapid recall, our efforts are focused on ensuring consumer protection, and conducting a thorough investigation with our third-party manufacturer.”
The CFIA says the recall was triggered by an investigation into a foodborne illness outbreak and that there have been reports of possible illnesses associated with consumption of the products.
The affected products involve certain Silk Canada refrigerated products sold in 1.75L to 1.89L containers.
Anyone who thinks they may have become ill with listeriosis after consuming any of the recalled products, most of which have an expiration date of October 4, should seek medical attention.
Recalled products should be thrown away or returned to the point of purchase.
The CFIA says food contaminated with listeria may not look or smell spoiled, but can still make you sick. Symptoms of listeriosis can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness.
