The dumbing down policy of the Quebec Ministry of Education (!), underpinned by financial management that is more of a manufacturing approach aimed above all at filling classes rather than offering rigorous training, is at the origin of the deplorable French that we have noted for years in a people to whom we “sell” too many diplomas in order to make schools, CEGEPs and universities profitable. An approach which, moreover, does not include the concern for the mastery of the language any more than that of a specialized training in terms of trades; which corresponds to launching number of ships taking on water.
The day when more importance was given to the ability to transmit a message than to its form, without the slightest prerequisite being required in terms of historical knowledge of French and the finesse that characterizes it in relation to the approximate American dialect, we have caused considerable damage to our society, a damage which brings us back to this Franglais of the last century which stemmed from the ignorance of an illiterate and necessarily illiterate society.
Thus do we currently gargle with the same verb that was current at the time of 1923, fault, moreover, of not having been able to demonstrate that the English language could not do without French without downright disappearing. To be convinced of this, it suffices to eliminate French words or words of French origin from his speech to discover that there is nothing left, or almost nothing; only shreds. In short, our mastery of English necessarily depends on that of our mother tongue. Failure to understand this leads straight to shipwreck.
