(OTTAWA) Public Services and Procurement Minister Helena Jaczek says the Liberal government expects to have a plan for the future of 24 Sussex Drive by the fall.
Mme Jaczek appeared before a House of Commons committee on government operations on Monday and was pressed by opposition MPs on when her government intends to make a decision on the Prime Minister’s official residence.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his family have not taken up residence at the mansion, which was closed to staff last fall due to worsening conditions, including a rodent infestation.
The National Capital Commission, which manages the property, says contractors have recently begun removing old electrical systems and asbestos, which is needed regardless of any decisions about the future of the building.
A spokeswoman said the ongoing work is expected to take a year and cost 4.3 million.
According to Mme Jaczek, the government expects the commission to provide a detailed list of options for the property’s future. The minister told MPs she plans to have a plan by the fall.
