Pipeline burst | Victims won’t return home for a month

More than a hundred tenants will have to wait at least a month before returning to their homes in a building badly affected by Friday’s major water leak in the Centre-Sud region.

Tenants of 100 units at Esplanade Cartier will have to wait four to six weeks before returning home, that is “if all goes well and there are no problems,” real estate developers Cogir and Prével told The Press, THURSDAY.

The affected tenants were evacuated last Tuesday after being left without electricity following the flooding, according to property developers.

A major water main break caused major flooding in the Centre-Sud sector.

The major water leak hit a lot on Esplanade Cartier located at the corner of Sainte-Catherine Street and De Lorimier Avenue. The water submerged the two basements, where the electrical panels are located, but no homes were flooded, according to Cogir and Prével.

Disaster contractors are now working to dry out the building’s basements so they can test the electrical panels and assess the full damage, a job that will “take a lot of time,” according to the developers, who said the victims’ rent will be refunded for the period from August 16 to 31.

More than 3,300 private buildings were affected by flooding related to the broken pipe, and 19 households were taken care of by the Red Cross, Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante said at a press conference Monday. “We’re still relieved, the situation could have been much worse,” she added.
