Samuel Piette is the only CF Montreal representative recalled by Canada for the international matches in mid-November. Mathieu Choinière and Joel Waterman, who both wish to become regulars in the maple leaf, are therefore not called up.
Canada will play two very important matches against Jamaica, on November 17 and 21. He will first travel to Kingston, before playing the second game of this home-and-away series in Toronto.
These matches constitute the quarter-finals of the League of Nations. The winner of these duels in total goals will not only qualify them for the 2023-2024 Nations League Finals, but will also qualify them for the CONMEBOL Copa América. This tournament will be played in the United States in the summer of 2024.
Thus, for the matches in “difficult” conditions this November, interim head coach Mauro Biello wishes to call on “an experienced group and veterans accustomed to matches where pressure is high”.
This is probably what explains the exclusion of Mathieu Choinière and Joel Waterman. The latter two have shone in MLS this year, but do not yet have much national team experience.
We understand that Biello did not want to experiment too much by including new faces in his squad. He seems to prefer to play it safe and use players he knows. Even if they have had up-and-down 2023 seasons, like Mark-Anthony Kaye and Lucas Cavallini.
In addition to Samuel Piette, Canada’s regular squad was called up.
Biello will also be able to count on Stephen Eustáquio in great form, who is having very good times in Portugal with FC Porto. Eustáquio had to withdraw at the last minute from the training camp in Japan and did not participate in this meeting in October.
Mauro Biello will speak with the media in the afternoon.
