A man who tried to flee from police by ramming their vehicle was arrested Monday in Pierrefonds. The suspect was allegedly involved in several car thefts in the past year.
The 21-year-old man is suspected of deliberately driving a car into police officers several times in the past year, according to a press release issued by the Montreal Police Department (SPVM). Each time, he allegedly escaped in a stolen vehicle.
Last April, he allegedly hit a patrol officer with a black BMW reported stolen during an intervention near Stanley and Sherbrooke streets, before climbing onto a sidewalk chain and fleeing at high speed. Many pedestrians and motorists were in this downtown area at the time of this dangerous manoeuvre, according to the SPVM.
His three alleged accomplices in this story, men aged 18 to 25, have since been arrested.
Arrest
The young man’s escape ended last Monday when police located him in a residential area of Pierrefonds. Many specialized SPVM officers were mobilized due to the risk presented by the intervention.
The suspect appeared at the Montreal courthouse the day after his arrest. He is charged with breach of conditions, assault with a weapon and fleeing during a pursuit with a peace officer.
The man will remain in custody until the next stage of legal proceedings.
