“Pieces of time”, Jean Sioui

A Wendat from the Bear clan, Jean Sioui founded Éditions Hannenorak with his son Daniel in 2010. Hands outstretched towards others, those who “came from far away” to live in this country, the poems speak of “freedom / in silence of [s]at home.” All the grief caused by the kidnappings of children, the sending to Catholic schools, still hurts; and the mother is evoked even in this lack. “I would like to be a pearl on your breast / suckled for round-eyed children / who were stolen from you in the woods / to feed them with catechism,” the poet beautifully confides. The collection evokes the past weighed down by dispossession and incessantly taken up again through words woven with reminiscences of trees at the roots of history, rivers and traditions. What is intense about this voice is the singularity of its openness. Certain gestures remain to be accomplished: “Lay under Grandmother’s moon / wake up under Grandfather sun // Tomorrow I will go and tell fables to my son. » One day we will have to know how to read “the word Tse8ei in the bowl of wintergreen”.
