In the fall, it’s the mushroom picking season. Health authorities are issuing a warning to amateurs, because since July, the number of food poisoning from mushrooms has increased worryingly.

Autumn is the season for treasure hunts, such as porcini mushrooms or chanterelles. But be careful, not all mushrooms have to end up on our plate. “Here I don’t know what it is, so when in doubt I don’t take it off”, explains a Sunday picker who adopts the right reflex. Indeed, it is sometimes difficult to recognize them when about thirty fungi can turn out to be fatal.

Faced with the increase in the number of intoxications, nearly 1,000 cases from July 1 to August 29, 2021, including three deaths, the national health agency warns. Because, that’s almost as much as last year over six months. In the woods, a specialist warns about certain red mushrooms. “We do not collect and we do not consume”, insists Jacques Boyer of the circle of mycological studies in Aquitaine. A few meters away, another must not be eaten. “25 grams of fresh mushroom, that kills you a man in six days”, he explains. In case of doubt, it is possible to seek pharmacy advice to avoid any risk.
