A woman in her 40s was seriously injured in a fire in a three-storey residential building in the Sud-Ouest borough of Montreal overnight from Thursday to Friday.

The fire started around 1 a.m. in an apartment on the third floor of the building located on avenue Marin, near rue Saint-Jacques.

The 40-year-old was taken to hospital in critical condition to treat her injuries, said a spokesperson for the Montreal Fire Department (SIM).

A third alarm was triggered to mobilize some 90 firefighters who were able to control the fire confined to the third floor of the building.

The six dwellings in the building are uninhabitable “for the moment”, according to the SIM, which specifies that the occupants have been taken care of by the Canadian Red Cross.

The SIM believes that it is too early to talk about the cause of this fire, while the investigation continues.

In addition, the SIM spokesperson reminds us of the importance of having functional smoke alarms in buildings to prevent this type of situation.
