[PHOTOS] He drives in the opposite direction on the highway and causes a violent face-to-face in Quebec

A man lies between life and death after a collision caused by a motorist who took the highway in the opposite direction overnight from Thursday to Friday in the Quebec City sector.

Around 2 a.m., the driver of a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction on the Robert-Bourassa South highway entered head-on with a van, at the height of Père-Lelièvre Boulevard.

The offending driver in his 20s suffered serious injuries that would not be life threatening. His passenger, also in her twenties, escaped with minor injuries, according to the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).

The 50-year-old driving the van was seriously injured and transported to the hospital center where there are fears for his life, spokeswoman Hélène St-Pierre said.

The elderly woman in her sixties who accompanied him in the vehicle also suffered serious injuries, but her life is not in danger.

An SQ reconstructionist was dispatched to the scene to try to determine the exact circumstances of this major accident. Alcohol could be involved in this case, it was said.

The Robert-Bourassa highway was closed between the exit to boulevard Père-Lelièvre and chemin Sainte-Foy. It was reopened around 5:45 a.m. Friday morning.
