(Philadelphia) Daniel Briere was officially named the Philadelphia Flyers general manager on Thursday, which means he will no longer be on an interim basis.
Briere, who retired as a hockey player in 2015, held various management positions before being named interim general manager of the Flyers.
The 45-year-old Quebecer had obtained this promotion following the dismissal of Chuck Fletcher last March, following a disappointing 2022-23 season with the Flyers.
“Daniel Brière brings a new perspective and dynamism to the role of General Manager. “Danny” is excited to rebuild a franchise he knows so well, having spent eight seasons in administration and six more as a player,” said Daniel J. Hilferty, who was named CEO and Governor of Comcast Spectacor, the Flyers’ affiliate company, on 1er July 2022.
“After an impressive 17-year career in the NHL, he understands the reality of today, today’s player, as we try to make the best decisions for the future of this franchise. “Danny has proven beyond doubt that he’s the right person for this job and what we’re trying to accomplish,” Hilferty said.
On the other hand, the formation of Pennsylvania indicated that Keith Jones has been named president of hockey operations of the team.
The Flyers have confirmed in the same breath that John Tortorella will retain his role as head coach of the team.
“I’m confident that Keith and Danny — along with coach Tortorella, Valerie (Camillo, President and COO of Comcast Spectacor) and myself — are the right management team to guide the Philadelphia Flyers. We are all committed to rebuilding and sustaining a winning culture — and doing it the right way,” concluded Hilferty.
Brière scored 307 goals and had 389 assists in 973 career NHL games with the Arizona Coyotes, Buffalo Sabres, Flyers, Montreal Canadiens and Colorado Avalanche. The native of Gatineau was a first-round pick, 24e in total, of the Coyotes at the 1996 NHL auction.
